Beginner’s Guide to Choosing the Right Knitting Yarn and Needles

By knittingandtextile

Many people believe knitting is a hobby reserved for older generations. However, this misconception is common. The number of women knitting in the U.S. increased by nearly 150% between 2002-2004. This was before Etsy introduced a whole generation to the joys and benefits of knitting.

Here are some tips to help you get started with knitting.

It is important to choose the right knitting yarn. A medium-weight worsted yarn is recommended for beginners. Because it is easier to see the stitches, light colors are better. Because wool is super stretchy and smooth, it can be easier to knit with for beginners. Fine yarns made from cotton and natural fiber yarns work better for advanced knitters, as they aren’t as stretchy and can be more difficult to knit with. When shopping for knitting yarn, don’t be afraid of taking your time. Experts recommend that you feel the yarn in your hands to gauge its elasticity.

Once you have chosen a yarn, it is time to choose a knitting needle. They can also be made from different materials, just like yarn. Experts recommend bamboo or wood needles for beginners. The stitches won’t slip off the needles as easily with other materials. They are also easy to hold and don’t slip like aluminum or plastic needles. You can also buy several sets of knitting needles to experiment with different materials until your favorite type.

Your knitting experience will also be affected by the size of your knitting needles. This applies to both width and length. For beginners, medium sizes are best. You should choose a width of 6mm (4mm), 7mm (4.5mm), and 8mm (5mm). A 10-inch needle is a good starting size for length because it’s small enough to be easily handled. You may need a longer needle to hold all the stitches as you work on larger projects.

There is a simple way to make sure you only buy the best yarn for beginners. Talk to an experienced knitter. Knitters love to share their passion for knitting and will happily point you in the right direction.

Once you have chosen the right yarn and needles for knitting, you are ready to get started.
